Melissa Smith : owner and artisan

I grew up on a farm. Left the farm. Came back to the farm.

I had a full time job working for someone else and I always had that gut feeling that I needed to be doing something creative...something more fulfilling....something that I could create, cultivate, and nurture into existence. In 2002 the simple idea of creating the first candle in the kitchen of our c.1820 home was conceived and like planting a seed as my father, grandfather & great grandfather..... it grew.

All About 1820...

The 1820 House candle line was conceived in the kitchen of our restored, circa 1820, home in 2004. Our goal was to provide a natural and exceptional, fragranced product. The idea of using soy and vegetable based wax grown by American farmers really appealed to us since we have had a working farm since 1919.

As the business evolved, we outgrew the kitchen and opened our first studio to sell our product in 2009. We plan to develop an energy efficient manufacturing facility at the farm in the near future.

Our glassware is either recycled content or can be recycled, and all packaging is made of recycled and repurposed materials.

1820 House Features ...

Our candles have been sold at numerous shows including Shaker Woods, Butler Art Holiday Show, Bazaar Bizarre Cleveland, I Made It Market, Pittsburgh and many other location.

We also have had our studio featured as a selected business on the Ikea Business site and more recently have had a feature on WFMJ 21 Youngstown, Ohio as well as the Casey Malone Show.

Are you particular?

Well, we are! Which is why each and every candle is still hand poured one at a time with care. We are especially picky about packaging, the asthetics of how a candles look in a home, and leaving as small of a footprint on the enviorment as possible. We would like our customers to feel they are getting a luxury item at a reasonable cost, as well as supporting small business, local commerce, green living and our farming communities.

Understanding Aromachology & Aromatherapy

Aromachology? It is simple. It is the basic awareness of how a certain fragrance evokes feelings of peace, happiness, bliss, relaxation or bring up memories of something familiar or comforting.

The main difference is that Aromatherapy deals in the actual effects that certain botanical ingredients have on the body, such as how peppermint can clear the sinuses, aid in headache relief or help with mental alertness.

Our aromatherapy line offers pure vegetable / soy wax infused with essential oils and complex high quality perfumed fragrances in natural base. While utillizing the purity of the essential oils of plants it is important not to deplete an abundance of the actual plant life.

When creating aromachology candles, synthetic or aroma chemicals are used to create a certain fragrance such as "cookies" or "pumpkin pie". Those scents just aren't found in nature.

The use of different fragrance oils as well as the essential oil blends allows me to create a beautifully fragranced candles to please a wide variety of tastes .

When you burn your candle the goal is essentially..........to evoke the senses.

Welcome to 1820 House

We are especially particular about the packaging, the asthetics of how a candle looks in its setting, and it must leave as small of a footprint on the enviorment as possible. We would like our customers to feel they are getting a luxury item at a reasonable cost, as well as supporting small business, local commerce, green living and our farming communities.
